A Look at Prescription Drug Abuse

Content

One often ignored aspect of drug abuse is the overuse of prescription drugs. The idea may seem surprising to some, given that it is prescribed by doctors. Many prescription drugs have narcotic effects which if used incorrectly can lead to addiction. In the past few years a disturbing trend has emerged where teens are stealing their parents’ prescription drugs to get high.

The problem is further compounded by teens who are not users themselves, but rather steal the drugs to sell to their peers. Many adults forget about the unused portions of their medications. This makes it easy for their children to have access to them.

In some cases, adults become addicted to their own medications. This is most common with painkillers and antidepressants. Stimulants are also popular among people who abuse prescription drugs. The trend has been growing for a number of reasons including:

1. Collusion on the part of unethical pharmacists and doctors. This has led to highly publicized arrests in recent years.

2. The mistaken belief that prescription drugs are safer than illicit drugs. Deaths have been reported from abuse of medication, and it can be the gateway drug to trying other substances.

3. The ready availability of prescription drugs make them more appealing to many people. Expired drugs are sometimes sold to dealers or even taken from the trash. These drugs are now available for sale on the streets or even at parties.

Parents and civic groups are doing their part to raise awareness of this issue. These days many rehab centers routinely count prescription drug abusers among their patients.
